Many people experience feelings of anxiety, withdrawal, or overwhelm at various points in their lives. It’s common to feel anxious or disconnected, especially when thoughts race uncontrollably, leaving one feeling breathless and overwhelmed. If this sounds familiar, please know you are not alone.
For years, I struggled with panic attacks and anxiety, particularly during my school days when I faced bullying. It wasn’t until my 30s that I discovered effective techniques to manage my symptoms. Finding relief from panic attacks was a significant turning point, and I want to ensure that no one else has to endure such a long and difficult journey. There is a path to peace and calm.
Understanding the nervous system is crucial, as it plays a vital role in how individuals respond to stress and anxiety. When in a heightened state—often referred to as "fight or flight"—it becomes challenging to focus, connect with others, or truly enjoy the present moment. To thrive and be in a state of flow, it is essential to bring the nervous system back into balance.
One powerful tool for regulating the nervous system is breathwork. By consciously controlling the breath, the body can be signalled that it’s time to relax. This practice can help shift from fight or flight into a more serene and grounded experience.
A Simple Breathwork Technique to Try:
1. Find a Comfortable Position: Sit or lie down in a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed.
2. Take a Deep Breath: Inhale deeply through the nose for a count of four, allowing the belly to expand.
3. Hold Your Breath: Hold the breath for a count of four.
4. Exhale Slowly: Release the breath through the mouth for a count of six, letting go of any tension.
5. Pause: After exhaling, pause for a count of 4 before taking the next breath.
Repeat this cycle for several minutes. If racing thoughts arise, gently ask yourself, "What is my next thought going to be?" This mindfulness practice can create space for calmer thoughts. The art is not to stop the thoughts but to become the observer of the thoughts without attaching to them. ( it’s impossible to stop the thoughts while you are alive we have on average 70’000 thoughts a day).
